Amy is our team assistant. She has great communication skills, coordinates diaries effortlessly & is ruthlessly efficient. She’s also artificial intelligence, or ‘AI’.
Here’s how working with Amy has changed me.
1. AI makes me better. I instruct my AI assistant explicitly about what I expect and I give her all the information she needs in one hit. If I don’t, she’ll be back on my case within minutes asking where a meeting should be held or how long it will last. I also put time and effort into ‘training’, which in Amy’s case means outlining in advance my favourite meeting locations and available scheduling hours.
2. Working with a machine doesn’t make me any less human. I don’t need to make small talk, but I do say “please” & “thank you” because no-one wants to be the a** who talks down to a software application.
3. I have developed a renewed interest in efficiency and simplicity. Since meeting Amy and seeing how easily repetitive tasks can be automated, I’ve become near obsessed with ensuring that the processes within our own start-up venture are kept as straightforward as possible and that the humans are focused on what they do best. (Hint: this isn’t button pressing)
4. Last but not least. There’s been much talk of AI ‘taking’ jobs, although no-one seems to be able to agree to what extent this machine-led invasion will transform our workplaces. Personally, I think it’s far too early for any of us to truly understand where AI will take us, but the opportunities are exciting and we should be willing to at least debate the possibility of an AI workforce. Because ultimately, the most unexpected benefit of AI is that I am learning to value the human interactions in my day so much more – and that, really is worth considering.
